Background and career path of the Seattle Seahawks general manager.
Schneider studied history and education at St. Thomas in Minnesota and, as a junior, wrote to Hall of Fame executive Ron Wolf asking for scouting work — landing a summer internship with the Packers. He scouted for Green Bay, ran pro personnel for the Chiefs, and held senior roles with the Seahawks and Redskins before returning to Green Bay as a top aide. The Seahawks hired him as general manager in January 2010, paired with head coach Pete Carroll.
Schneider built the "Legion of Boom" defense and a championship roster largely through shrewd drafting and value finds — most famously selecting Russell Wilson in the third round in 2012, along with Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor and Bobby Wagner. He has a knack for unearthing talent late in drafts and among undrafted players, and was elevated to president of football operations in 2024.

The Seattle Seahawks have been paying a premium this season, with several contracts that outpace the expected production level. Across 28 contracts, 3 grade out as good value and 2 look like overpays based on comparable deals around the league. The best bang-for-the-buck deal was Dante Fowler Jr (B) at $2.5M/yr — getting defensive end production well above the price point. The priciest commitment relative to production was Brandon Pili (D-) at $1.8M/yr — the defensive tackle market may have been richer than the on-field return suggests. Cap flexibility could become a concern if these contracts don't produce at the expected level.
Seattle Seahawks' 2026 moves under John Schneider have drawn significant criticism from fans and media alike. Of 37 graded moves, 10 landed well with the fanbase, 19 drew mixed reactions, and 8 were viewed negatively. The standout move was bringing in Dante Fowler Jr (C+), which generated the most positive buzz. The most questioned decision was the Michael Briscoe cut (F), which drew the sharpest criticism. The fanbase remains split — some moves look promising while others need time to prove their worth.

Each GM grade is rolled up from the underlying transactions attributed to that GM's tenure. When a GM signs a player, that signing's Contract Value Index grade flows into the GM's portfolio score; the same player's subsequent performance and sentiment grades flow into the GM's respective summaries. Phased attribution applies for new GMs: the first three years weight the prior GM's legacy deals at 100%/66%/33%, ramping the new GM's ownership of roster outcomes.
For broader context, the NFL hub has team rankings, GM report cards, and the transactions feed. The NFL GM rankings page ranks every front office side-by-side on the same four dimensions.
