Background and career path of the Kansas City Chiefs general manager.
Veach was a running back and return man at Delaware — where he was a teammate of future Bears head coach Matt Nagy — before beginning his NFL career in 2004 as a coaching intern with the Eagles under Andy Reid. He followed Reid to Kansas City in 2013, working through personnel roles, and was named general manager in July 2017.
Veach's signature decision was a franchise-altering one: he was a driving force behind trading up to draft Patrick Mahomes 10th overall in 2017. Building around Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce, he has overseen a dynasty — multiple AFC titles and Super Bowl championships in LIV, LVII and LVIII — while continually retooling the supporting cast around his core.

The Kansas City Chiefs have been paying a premium this season, with several contracts that outpace the expected production level. Across 39 contracts, 7 grade out as good value and 4 look like overpays based on comparable deals around the league. The best bang-for-the-buck deal was L'Jarius Sneed (A) at $1.2M/yr — getting safety production well above the price point. The priciest commitment relative to production was Mike Caliendo (F) at $1.4M/yr — the offensive line market may have been richer than the on-field return suggests. Cap flexibility could become a concern if these contracts don't produce at the expected level.
Kansas City Chiefs' 2026 moves under Brett Veach have drawn significant criticism from fans and media alike. Of 48 graded moves, 14 landed well with the fanbase, 26 drew mixed reactions, and 8 were viewed negatively. The standout move was bringing in Mason Thomas (A+), which generated the most positive buzz. The most questioned decision was the Brandon George cut (F), which drew the sharpest criticism. The fanbase remains split — some moves look promising while others need time to prove their worth.

Each GM grade is rolled up from the underlying transactions attributed to that GM's tenure. When a GM signs a player, that signing's Contract Value Index grade flows into the GM's portfolio score; the same player's subsequent performance and sentiment grades flow into the GM's respective summaries. Phased attribution applies for new GMs: the first three years weight the prior GM's legacy deals at 100%/66%/33%, ramping the new GM's ownership of roster outcomes.
For broader context, the NFL hub has team rankings, GM report cards, and the transactions feed. The NFL GM rankings page ranks every front office side-by-side on the same four dimensions.
